ATHENS, July 1 (Reuter) - NBA recruit Arvydas Sabonis spurred Lithuania to a 90-80 upset victory over Croatia on Saturday in the semifinals of the European basketball championship. Lithuania will now meet Yugoslavia, who beat Greece 60-52, in Sunday's final. Sabonis, who has signed with the Portland Trail Blazers, dominated under the basket, netting 26 points and proved the perfect partner for Seattle SuperSonics guard Sarunas Marciulionis who top-scored with 27. "I haven't seen my team playing this well for a long time," Lithuanian coach Vladas Garastas said. "We improved our defence and if we play this well tomorrow we can win the trophy." Croatia were affected by an injury to Chicago Bulls star Toni Kukoc who played with three stitches in his right hand and netted only 10 points. "Kukoc's injury created big problems because he could not control the ball with his right hand," Croat coach Aleksandar Petrovic said. "Lithuania deserved the victory because we could not control Marciulionis' probes. "I'm giving a slight edge to Yugoslavia tomorrow because they have a more complete team." Dino Radja of the Boston Celtics top scored for Croatia with 25 points and five rebounds but the Croatians not confine Sabonis who grabbed 17 rebounds. Yugoslavia kept cool in front of a boisterous home crowd of 20,000, taking a 27-24 halftime lead. Danilovic top-scored for Yugoslavia with 19 points and guard Dejan Bodiroga added 12. George Sigalas, one of Europe's best defenders, limited Danilovic to less than 20 points for the first time in the tournament and contributed eight points for the Greeks. Centre Panayotis Fasoulas top scored for the Greeks with 14 points and pulled down 14 rebounds in a Homeric battle with Los Angeles Lakers centre Vlade Divac who sunk 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. "The Greek tactics were very good with their very tough defence," Yugoslav coach Dusan Ivkovic said. "Congratulations to Greece for playing so well and congratulations to my players who reached the final after a three-year absence." |
